The Executive Committee (AU) is the supreme decision-making body of the Nordic Kennel Union. Together, representatives from the Nordic countries create common rules and regulations, discuss Nordic policies and reach common standpoints on important issues in the dog world.
Each Nordic kennel club sends three people to represent them in the Nordic Kennel Union. These commonly include the president, the CEO and one more representative from each kennel club. They meet twice a year in one of the Nordic countries.
The secretariat of the NKU changes every three years between Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. It is the task of the secretariat to handle the practical organization of meetings. Among other thing, this includes preparing and distributing agendas and keeping meeting minutes.
The secretariat of the NKU is currently managed by Norway (until the end of 2020).
Finding common ground
Since it was formed in 1956, the Nordic Kennel Union has had no by-laws. Instead the NKU has developed a common practice for cooperation, based on mutual respect for each other and for majority decisions.
The Executive Committee decides on recommendations that all five member countries agree to follow. For example, common Nordic recommendations exist for various dog health issues as well as issues regarding the registration of new breeds.
There are common Nordic rules and regulations for the Nordic Championships in Agility, Freestyle/HTM, Obedience and Junior Handling. These rules have been set by the Executive Committee. It is therefore also their task to decide on any changes or amendments to these rules.
A strong collaborative spirit permeates the Nordic Kennel Union. The Executive Committee therefore works to create opportunities for different departments of the Nordic kennel clubs to create and reach mutual goals across national boundaries.
The NKU aims to be a strong, unified voice in the global dog world. The Executive Committee decides on common standpoints on issues discussed in the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).
